Fue en 1965 que Bob Guccione creó la revista Penthouse insinuando que habían llegado ahí porque los sacerdotes, conventos y miembros del Parlamento también necesitaban un poco de excitación. En 1968, PENTHOUSE ya vendía el doble de ejemplares que Playboy y con los chicos en Vietnam, Guccione decidió tomar América por asalto, trasladando la sede a la ciudad de Nueva York en 1969. Para anunciar la llegada de la revista a Estados Unidos puso un anuncio en el New York Times diciendo, "Vamos a cazar conejos".
En 1979, Guccione se metió en el mundo del cine con la Producción de Calígula. La cinta se hizo muy famosa, en ella brillaron con luz propia algunos de los nombres más relevantes del Hollywwod de la época incluidos Peter O’Toole y Helen Mirren, en lo que fue un paseo salvaje por la antigua Roma. Entre otros protagonistas estelares, Gore Vidal, el guionista y la controversia sobre el contenido para adultos de la película. ""Guccione"" era ya un nombre indisociable de ""PENTHOUSE"".
Los chicos de la Revista Penthouse nunca se conformaron con sentarse y dejar que las cosas pasasen, así en su 15 aniversario escogieron a Vanessa Williams, la primera Miss America negra, para su portada y, por supuesto, para varías paginas interiores. Durante los siguientes 10 años, PENTHOUSE expuso las aventuras sexuales del televangelista Jerry Falwell o las de Clinton en la Casa Blanca y fomentó su reputación en pro de lla liberación sexual atrayendo una atención inesperada.
