I recently took a day off to pay a speeding ticket.
As I went up the steps of the small-town courthouse, I recognized one of the officers who was leaving the building. He stopped just outside and lit a cigarette. He looked up and our eyes met. He smiled as I walked over.
We embraced briefly. He asked what the hell I was doing there, and I pleaded my case to him. He filled me in on his life. As I halfway listened, I studied his body. The uniform did not do him justice. It occurred to me that while we’d been good friends in college, we hadn’t actually been alone since we’d once shared a shower following a drunken fraternity party. I recalled the incident easily because it was the first time I had ever showered with someone of the opposite sex.
