Two years ago, I decided my life needed a complete reset. My marriage had fallen apart, and despite a great MCAT score, I did not feel ready to take the plunge into medical school just yet. Finally single, I moved across the state and took an overnight shift in a small phlebotomy lab that ran tests for local clinics. Not only did keeping late hours pay better, the graveyard shift basically guaranteed peace and quiet. But I’ll admit it could get lonely sometimes.
But with the machines humming softly in the background, it was easy to achieve a perfect kind of concentration, in which I focused so hard I floated out my head. I was doing exactly that one night after loading some vials into the centrifuge, when the phone rang at 3 a.m.
I practically jumped out of my skin, and I hurried to grab the receiver.
