Margie said to me in her best critical tone as I unwrapped the cherry lollipop. “Grown women don’t suck on lollipops at work,” she continued, as we walked from the break room back to our desks.
“Where do you read things like that?” I asked. “Is there some manual I missed? How to Behave if You Are a Grown-Up?”
She shook her head. Her perfect copper curls bounced, but only a little, as if they knew better than to misbehave on her head. “It’s just not done,” she insisted.
