With each step that Doris and I took to the door of the apartment building, my heart beat a little faster. To put it plainly, I was nervous. Doris was older than me by about four years, attractive and a lot of fun to be with. What was causing my nervous anticipation was how comfortable she had been with all of my sexual references to her high-heeled boots.

I opened the apartment door for her, and as she walked in, Doris murmured, “Thank you.” I like that. It’s nice for women to appreciate traditional male-female roles. We engaged in a few moments’ conversation while I hung up our jackets in the front hall closet. Then I turned on the light for her in the living room, switched the three-way bulb to the lowest setting and walked into the kitchen to pour us each an iced tea.
