We were so busy going on about punks and outlaws that we completely forgot about America’s birthday.
Happy Fourth of July! If you feel like going beyond hot dogs and Budweisers this National Fireworks Day, here are some cocktails that will hit the mark.
1. Hole in One
Though this drink may seem like a bit of a dud, you’ll be surprised at how refreshing bitters, Scotch, and some bubbles can be.
Ingredients:
— two parts Scotch
— one part dry vermouth
— dash of bitters
— juice of half a lemon
Fill your shaker with ice, add ingredients, strain, and serve.
2. Mayahuel
This cocktail was invented by Mexican agave farmers who drank these puppies as their nightly medicine. But you can have it whenever.
Ingredients:
— two parts mezcal or tequila
— ½ part Cocchi Americano
— ½ part dry vermouth
— a dash of Angostura orange bitters
Mix ingredients into an old-fashioned glass, add ice, stir rapidly, and rub the rim with a lime wedge.
3. Beer Margarita
This drink is so good you won’t even care if it’s served with a straw and umbrella.
Ingredients:
— one part white tequila
— two parts light beer (Corona or Dos Equis)
— one part frozen limeade
— one cup ice
Chill then salt the rim of a pint glass. In a blender, mix tequila, limeade, and ice. Pour half the mixture into glass, then dunk your beer bottle upside-down into the beverage. Top with a lime wedge and serve.
4. Americano
This simple highball will never be on the bar menu, and you may get an espresso in hot water if you order it. So serve these at home as a pre-dinner cocktail.
Ingredients:
— one part Campari
— one part Martini Rosso
— two or three ice cubes
Pour into a short glass, top with club soda, and serve.
